Parrot Care Sheet
Essential Information for Keeping Your Feathered Friend Healthy and Happy
General Information
Parrots are intelligent, social, and long-lived birds that require time, attention, and proper care. With the right environment and diet, your parrot can live a healthy and happy life for many years.
Housing
- Cage Size: Choose the largest cage you can accommodate. The cage should be at least 1times the wingspan of the bird in all directions.
- Bar Spacing: Ensure the spacing is appropriate for the species to prevent escape or injury.
- Perches: Provide a variety of perches (natural wood, rope, and cement). Ensure they are different diameters to promote foot health.
- Placement: Keep the cage in a draft-free, well-lit area, away from direct sunlight and cooking fumes.
Diet
A balanced diet is critical for your parrot’s health
Fresh Foods (20-30%):
- Fruits: Apples, berries, bananas, mango, etc. Avoid avocado (toxic).
- Vegetables: Leafy greens, carrots, broccoli, peppers, sweet potato.
- Seeds/Nuts (70%) : good range of seeds and nut.
- Fresh Water: Always provide clean water daily.
Enrichment
Parrots are highly intelligent and need mental stimulation:
- Toys: Rotate toys regularly to prevent boredom. Include foraging toys, chewable items, and interactive puzzles.
- Social Interaction: Spend at least 1-2 hours daily interacting with your parrot. They thrive on attention.
- Out-of-Cage Time: Provide a safe space for your parrot to stretch its wings and explore for several hours daily.
Grooming
- Bathing: Offer a shallow dish of water or use a spray bottle to mist them a few times a week.
- Beak and Nail Care: Provide cuttlebone and natural perches to maintain beak and nail health. Trim nails if they become overgrown.
Health
- Signs of a Healthy Parrot: Bright eyes, smooth feathers, active behavior, and a good appetite.
- Common Illnesses: Look out for feather plucking, lethargy, loss of appetite, or changes in droppings.
- Vet Visits: Schedule annual check-ups with an avian vet and seek immediate care if your bird seems unwell.
Important Notes
- Toxins: Avoid fumes from non-stick cookware, candles, cleaning products, and cigarette smoke.
- Safety: Supervise when your parrot is out of the cage to prevent injury or chewing on harmful objects.
