About Congo Dwarf Frogs
- Scientific Name: Hymenochirus spp.
- Lifespan: 5–10 years with proper care
- Adult Size: 1.5–2.5 in (4–6 cm) body length
- Temperament: Peaceful, social, and best kept in groups of 2 or more
🏠 Housing
- Tank Size: Minimum 20 liters (5 gallons) for a small group; bigger is better
- Setup: Fully aquatic tank with secure lid (frogs can escape!)
- Substrate: Smooth sand or large river stones (avoid gravel they could swallow)
- Décor: Plants (live or artificial), caves, and hiding spots to help them feel safe
🌡️ Heating & Lighting
- Water Temp: 24–26°C (75–79°F)
- Lighting: Moderate aquarium lighting (not too bright; frogs prefer dimmer conditions)
- Heating: Use an aquarium heater to maintain stable temperature
- Special Note: They do not need a basking spot — fully aquatic frogs
💧 Water Quality
- Filtration: Gentle filtration (strong currents stress them out)
- Water Changes: Partial (25%) weekly
- pH Range: Neutral to slightly acidic (6.5–7.5)
- Important: Always dechlorinate tap water before use
🍽️ Feeding
- Diet: Carnivorous — feed a mix of:
- Frozen or live bloodworms
- Brine shrimp
- Daphnia
- Special sinking frog pellets
- Feeding Frequency: 3–4 times per week in small portions (remove leftovers)
🖐️ Handling
- Temperament: Very gentle, but should not be handled
- Tip: Their skin is delicate and absorbs oils/chemicals — handle only if absolutely necessary, using wet hands or a soft net
🧼 Cleaning
- Spot Clean: Remove uneaten food daily to prevent water fouling
- Full Clean: Monthly tank cleaning with safe aquarium methods (never soap or chemicals)
