Malaysian Forest Scorpion

Malaysian Forest Scorpion Care Guide

Introduction

Malaysian Forest Scorpions (Heterometrus sp.) are large, glossy black scorpions native to Southeast Asia. They are often confused with Emperor Scorpions but tend to be more defensive. While their venom is mild, they rely more on their powerful pincers for defense.

Housing

  • Enclosure Size: A 6-gallon tank is suitable for a single adult.
  • Substrate: Use coconut fiber, peat moss, or soil to allow burrowing.
  • Temperature & Humidity: Maintain temperatures between 75-90°F (24-32°C) with humidity levels around 70-80%.
  • Lighting: No special lighting is required; they prefer dim environments.
  • Decor: Provide hiding spots like cork bark, logs, and leaf litter.

Diet

  • Primary Food: Feed gut-loaded crickets, roaches, and mealworms.
  • Feeding Schedule: Offer food every few days, removing uneaten prey.
  • Water: Provide a shallow water dish to maintain hydration.

Handling & Temperament

  • Handling: Not recommended—these scorpions are defensive and may pinch or sting.
  • Activity: They are nocturnal, spending most of the day hidden.
  • Social Behavior: Best kept alone, as they may fight if housed together.

Health & Common Issues

  • Molting: Ensure high humidity to prevent molting issues.
  • Dehydration: Keep the substrate moist but not soaked.
  • Stress: Avoid excessive handling or bright lights

Conclusion

Malaysian Forest Scorpions are fascinating pets for experienced keepers. With proper care, they can live up to 10 years. Their striking appearance and bold behavior make them an exciting addition to any collection.
